Scope

MJF was tasked to undertake the flooring improvements of one of the largest subsea, oil and gas companies in the UK at their primary facility in Dunfermline. Given the rigorous demands of their industrial manufacturing operations, it was essential to select and install flooring systems capable of withstanding the daily heavy-duty activities. The flooring needed to provide not only durability but also resilience against exposure to a variety of lubricants, chemicals, and other industrial substances, ensuring long-term performance and safety within the facility. It was essential that close collaboration would be essential to ensure success of the project. Starting with an initial trial area, we worked hand-in-hand with on-site team to develop a strategic and phased program tailored to their specific operational needs. This approach was meticulously designed to minimise any disruption to their manufacturing schedules, allowing them to continue full-scale production while the flooring refurbishment was underway. By aligning each phase of the installation with their operational requirements, MJF programmed the project with the aim of maintaining the facility's full operational capacity throughout the entire process.

Spotlight on the Project

The client is a leading global energy company that provides a wide range of services and technologies to the oil and gas industry. The company specialises in subsea, onshore, offshore, and surface projects, offering integrated solutions from the design and engineering phase through to construction, installation, and maintenance.

The project required a high-performance flooring solution in order to withstand the demands of an industrial environment while maintaining a clean, professional appearance. MJF selected a robust, multi-layer resin system specifically designed for heavy traffic areas, chemical resistance, and long-term durability.

The flooring system chosen was an epoxy resin base coat, combined with a polyurethane topcoat. This combination was ideal for its superior strength, chemical resistance, and flexibility. The epoxy layer provided a durable, load-bearing foundation, while the polyurethane topcoat enhanced the floor’s resistance to abrasion, impacts, and chemicals, ensuring long-lasting performance.

Challenges and Solutions

Scheduling posed a challenge during the flooring installation project, primarily due to the need to balance the refurbishment process with our client's full operational capacity. To address this, we collaborated closely with the on-site team to develop a strategic program that ensured minimal disruption to their manufacturing schedules. This required a phased approach, where each section of the flooring was installed in alignment with their production cycles, allowing for seamless continuity of operations. Time constraints added complexity, as the team had to complete the work swiftly to avoid any impact on their tightly structured production timelines.

Working within an active manufacturing environment also posed safety and logistical challenges. We ensured that our installation process did not interfere with their ongoing operations or pose risks to employees, requiring meticulous planning and effective communication with multiple stakeholders within the company. This included production managers, facilities managers and safety officers, and was essential to keep the project on track and address any issues promptly. This collaborative approach allowed MJF to overcome these challenges and successfully complete the flooring installation without disrupting their operational efficiency.

Project Outcomes

MJF’s installation of resin flooring at this facility delivered several notable outcomes, addressing both the functional and aesthetic requirements of the client. The resin floor offered exceptional durability, meeting the demands of a high-traffic, high impact industrial environment. Its seamless, non-porous surface improved safety by reducing the risk of slips and trips, and it was easy to clean and maintain, ensuring long-term operational efficiency.

The installation was completed within the agreed timeline and budget, demonstrating MJF’s commitment to delivering high-quality work with minimal disruption to Technip’s operations. The new flooring also enhanced the overall appearance of the space, giving it a modern, professional finish that aligned with our client's standards of excellence.
